Mixed research that can be used in

Mixed Method ResearchThere are several types of research methods that can be implemented within areas of criminal justice field. Based on the type of information and data to be collected, one should be keen on choosing the correct research method that will bring a positive outcome on the research. In this particular assignment, we will analyze mixed method research that can be used in the criminal justice field. From its definition, mixed method research refers to a research that uses both qualitative and quantitative research as a method of collecting data. Hence, the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods provides a reasonable mechanism to bring a better understanding of what is under question. There are four major components involved in mixed method research design, which are embedded, triangulation, exploratory and explanatory designs.

On the other hand, it is also important to note the two types of sequencing that can occur while making crucial decisions. The two types of sequencing include; Simultaneous sequencing: This is typically utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods but basically have limited interaction between the two during data collection, although the extracted data will get used in supporting each methods outcome hence contribute to the final understanding. Sequential sequencing: this type only utilized one method before another method is implemented also the results obtained from used method dictates the next method to be implemented.

Strength and Weakness of Mixed Method Research DesignData collection under mixed method research design requires the researcher to implement surveys and statistical data derived from both qualitative and quantitative methods. Joining the two methods will emerge as a very key important element as the researcher will be able to generate a unique approach contributing to the main component of mixed method research. Another strength aspect is during the point of the data analysis. While in the process of analyzing data, qualitative data helps in clarification, interpretation, describing, and quantitative result validation. Also, analyzing quantitative results there are concerns and question involved, hence a researcher can make a follow up with the aid of qualitative data collection and analysis. This will eventually help the researcher cover all angles that are needed, unlike a situation where only one method was applied.

Also, another key component is where a researcher needs to connect the two methods together for adequate samples from various sources. If a researcher is not educated enough or experienced enough in both researchers, they will be unable to collectively gather and interpret the information of the mixed method research. They should be able to adequately design visual models so that the reader can understand the design and flow of the researcher’s content.

When a researcher is presenting their results and analysis, the main agenda is to make either the listener or the readers understand the impact of the study conducted under whichever method of data collection. While interpreting a researcher will have to explain and discuss the design, data analysis, data collected, their interpretations, and how valid is the study. During their study, they will be able to explain to the reader their perspectives of the experiment by incorporating perspectives of individuals and developing an understanding changes that need to be made in our criminal justice system.

In the qualitative research, such things as words, pictures, and narratives can be used to add meaning to quantitative data. You can turn around and look at the quantitative data will enhance the clarity and precision of the words, pictures, and narratives. The mixed methods approach also gives a researcher a wider range of questioning on their topic of research. By mixing both the quantitative and qualitative approaches it enhances our validity and reliability. Among the weaknesses is when researchers have to mix numerous methodologies. With the methodologies, researchers are looking at statistics, numbers, and even dealing with feelings of emotions or lack thereof. This can be difficult when a researcher does not encompass all of these approaches and feels confident in them. If the researcher is not accurate, it could cost more time, money and other resources to complete the research which they may not have enough of any of them and could prolong, delay or even end their research.

Inconsistencies can also be found in the results due to the subjectivity of qualitative methods and objectivity of quantitative methods. Examine the use of such data by criminal justice agencies. In the criminal justice field, the history of the research has been dominated by the quantitative methods in our doctoral programs. In the past, qualitative methods were not incorporated like quantitative was. By combining these two together and establishing the mixed methods approach, the researchers have provided a middle ground to collectively use in the criminal justice research to better understand both sides of their research.

Using mixed method research in the criminal justice field allows researchers to interview, conduct surveys, compare data and allowed themselves to be empathetic to those involved. Being able to collect all forms of this data not only allowed researchers to pinpoint hotspots in neighborhoods, but also helped them better understand recidivism rates and even to better help in the rehabilitation aspects in the field (Brent ; Kraska, 2010). Continuing to use mixed methods research will help in getting a better understanding of all those involved in the criminal justice fields.
