Youth Rehabilitation
Introduction
An important social issue that is evident in society today is youth rehabilitation.
A Youth Rehabilitation Order (YRO) is a “Court Order which may be given to young people under the age of 18 years old when they are being sentenced for committing a criminal offense. Depression is a mental disorder characterized by extreme gloom, feelings of inadequacy, and inability to concentrate” (Depression, def. 3). The social issue connected to The First Stone because one of the main characters Leeza is sent to rehabilitation. She was sent there because she got into a car crash (Aker chapter 2). (The purpose of this paper is to describe how rehab supports youth their family and the criteria to receive treatment).
How the Individual is Affected
An individual can be affected several ways by rehabilitation. They can lose time of their life trying to get over drugs or recovering from a bad accident. “Drug use can disturb the proper development of the prefrontal cortex in the brain. This area of the brain is responsible for important functions like organization, risk assessment, impulse control, consequence prediction, and planning.” A teen can also be sent to a group home/ institution for kids under 18. Some young people in this type of home may receive counseling or other types of psychological or medical help. After a teen is done rehab and is let back into the real world they have lost on a year of learning, yes they have been helped to get over drugs but they have to be held back a year in school. How an individuals family is affected the family of an individual is affected because the family now has to scheduled counseling, participate in training groups, and they have to be educated about mental health. Other ways family are affected is that they have the child taken away for a certain amount of time depending on the circumstances. Even though the family has to participate in mental groups and can affect the family negatively it still helps.

What is the criteria for youth rehab
Residents may have been diagnosed with one or more mental health problem, (for example, depression, anxiety), have experienced parental divorce, death of a friend or family member, neglect, sexual abuse or other forms of violence. Trauma or family conflict be coping with genetic or other inherent conditions, behave in ways that can be dangerous to themselves or others, for example, by:self-harm setting fires violent or aggressive behaviours suicidal thoughts and behaviours substance use problems eating disorders running away. That is all permissible for teens under 18.
Conclusion
Youth rehabilitation is a good and bad thing. It’s a good thing because it helps the troubled youth but it takes people out of society and holds them back a year of their life going to rehab. Rehab is accepted because it shows that the person is willing to change instead of staying the way they are.
