In harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, both Boo Radley and Atticus shows compassion when atticus took on the tom Robinson case he knew that he was going to lose the case but he also knew that Tom robinson was innocent even though he was going to put his family in danger he still took on the case thus showing compassion. Atticus also shows compassion when he gave advice to jem and scout about getting along with the other folks. Boo Radley shows compassion when he covers scout with a blanket during the fire. Therefore Lee conveys the message that people should take risks for others, make some sacrifices for others and to stand up to the ones that can’t stand up for themselves because it will show that one care’s.Atticus shows compassion when he took on the case for defending Tom Robinson. During the trial Atticus says “Link that boy might go to the chair but he’s not going till the truth is told” pg 195 In this quote atticus is defending Tom Robinson. Atticus already knows that he is going to lose the case because of the prejudice of the city Macomb but he must preserve justice by explaining the actual proof. And that’s where he shows compassion for Tom. Atticus’s real true goal in the tom robinson’s case is to expose the truth to everybody in the community. Another example of Atticus showing compassion when he compares tells jem to compare himself with Mrs. Dubos to show him what real courage is like. “She had her own views about things a lot different from mine maybe son I told you that if you if you hadn’t lost your head i’d have made you go read to her. I wanted you to see what real courage is instead of getting the idea that courage is man with a gun in his hand.” Boo radley shows compassion towards scout when he gives a blanket to them. Scout says “Why we did we stayed then whose blanket is that? Blanket? Yes mam blanket isn’t ours?” In this quote it is obvious that boo radley was the one who covered scout with the blanket because Boo feels protective toward her. When miss maudie’s house catches on fire, everybody from the neighborhood comes out to help, atticus tells scout and jem to go up to the stations so the blanket couldn’t have come from atticus. Another example of Boo Radley showing compassion is when he protected Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell, he showed that he cared for them and will kill for them. “To my way of thinking Mr.Finch taking the one man who’s done you and this town a great service and dragging him with his shy ways into the limelight to me that’s a sin” Atticus shows compassion again when he talks to jem and scout when he gives them advice. As atticus speaks he says “You’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb around his skin and walk around it.”pg.30 In this quote It really shows how compassionate Atticus is towards his children. He gives them strong advice they could use in their life and how to trust and understand someone from their point of view. Another example of Atticus showing compassion is when he shows people that even though people are bad and bitter they’re still theyre friends no matter how they are. “This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home.” In conclusion, in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee the author conveys the message that people should take risks for others, make some sacrifices for others and to stand up to the ones that can’t stand up for themselves because it will show that one care’s. Atticus shows compassion when he takes on the Robinson case and when he gives advice to jem, Boo shows compassion when he protects Jem and scout from Bob Ewell.
