Before I narrate and criticise the scene which I chose for analysing, we need to know what society means and how society is handled and organised in the movie. According to a dictionary, society means that ”a large group of people who live together in an organized way, making decisions about how to do things and sharing the work that needs to be done. All the people in a country, or a several similar countries, can be referred to as a society.

” In my opinion, this definiton is insufficient and does not deal with individuals’ behaviours despite of the fact that society consists of individuals. In addition to the definition, to add more, the essence of the society is not only individuals but also their superego which is the character part controlling the id and the ego. The superego contains the values and morals of society which are learned from one’s parents and others. Its function is to control the id’s impulses, especially those which society forbids, such as sex and aggression.

It also has the function of persuading the ego to turn to moralistic goals rather than simply realistic ones. Alex and his droogs I discuss and examine completely are an example of lack of superego. The are many important issues like that and scenes which is needed to be handled and discussed in A Clockwork Orange. However I am going to talk about just one scene and mention some of the issues. I will give some details and try to analyse by summarizing the scene, Alex and his friends, droogs called by Alex head towards west and decide to exhibit ultraviolance as it always has been. He and his droogs find a big house called “HOME”, and they tries to enter the house led by Alex. By the way, there is a man and a woman in the house. The man is a writer or journalist, he is typing something on his typewriter, and the woman is reading a book.

Alex rings the doorbell and ask for help from the woman living there as if there has been a terrible accident. The woman refuses their help and Alex insists on the help and tells her that ”It’s a matter of life and death”. These lines make the scene ironic for me because Alex virtually indicate that there will be an incident and this ends up either life or death. Actually we can predict that there could be something about life or death.

In the background there are lots of books and shelves stacking up . The house is very tidy and ordinate. In this way, we can say that it is worthy and safe to live there. This house represents knowledge and order. Everything in the house is in the proper place, and there is no outstanding disorder in the house. While Alex rings the doorbell, Beethoven’s 5. symphony indicates that something like creeping and threatening is about to happen. Beethoven represents and stands for Alex’s violent and unchained nature.

They break into the house, and they beat up the old man, then tie him up and make him watch as Alex rapes his wife. Before raping her, when he knocks the bookcase over, a row of books lands neatly on the chair. That probably represents that although there is a destruction in the life, there always are ones who survived or things which stand in order. While breaking into house and taking actions, Alex and his droogs are wearing masks. In my opinion, these masks represent that Alex and his droogs are isolating themselves from the society or these masks represent that individuals who gain some different roles into the society. While raping the woman and trying to make the husband watch, Alex and his droogs represent the immoral and dirty nature of human kind, and they also refer what makes a person get in deeper badly, by showing off violence and sex. In the meantime, the distorted version of the music suits for chaos environment, and it also represents the corrupted nature of human being.
