AHi my name’s Jin and today I want to talk to you about the effects of social media on teenagers as majority of the populations is using it without the knowledge of what goes around with social media.
You wake up and look for your phone. It’s not connected to your charger. You start panicking. You remember you were scrolling down facebook as you tag your friends on a meme that you know your friends will laugh emoji on. You start looking around the bed. It’s not there. As you shuffle around looking around you found it the moment you check under your blanket. I’m sure that at least few of you can relate to this story because I also can relate to this story. Or perhaps as you open your book and you suddenly become drowsy and you get yourself in trouble at class for sleeping. These are some of the examples that I could name from misused social media and devices.
Everyday people such as you and I are using hours and hours on social media looking at so called memes and selfies. When you wake up, when you come after school, breaks in between studying, before sleeping these are just some of the times that people go on their social media. All these hours spent scrolling down and typing on a post that everybody can access. Everyone enjoys it but is it that important that we sacrifice our “real” social life? What are the positives and negatives of using such imperfect media platform?
Teenagers like you and I or even grown ups these days depend on the media for information upto latest news. Media is setting the mindset for teenagers. Before media was invented normal teenagers would spend average of 4 hours being active but these days it’s been completely swapped around, as teenagers these days spend 4 hours online. Also teenagers these days usually end up having sleepless night as they spend their time on media instead of sleeping without the parents knowledge. Sleep deprivation could lead to such problematic disruption such as insomnia, mood swings and increase rate of obesity.
Studies have also shown that teenagers are prone to violence as videos from media, TV and music video are influencing these teenagers. These bad habits are to be seen “cool” to teenagers. This has caused a lot of problem as teenagers are picking up bad habits such as drugs and alcohol. Also spending to much time have led the students behind on their school work.
Advertisements are one of the main problem as the models they use always have so called ‘”desirable and perfect body” that everyone should strive for. As teenagers try to imitate them they rather become discouraged or depressed getting to know that so called body type isn’t something that everyone can achieve. At worse occasions people are getting body shamed and racist as they are far away from that ideal body type.
Teenagers are also getting bullied in social media. Teenagers who have experience of this would often be depressed and have hardships from emotional disorders. Some bullies that went to far even ended up making other people commit suicide as they find this too much to handle from all the negativity and stress.
Some social media such as snapchat always makes the user to take a photo to send someone a message. When they run out of ideas it always leads to using someone else as a figure for the photo. Lots of people get irritated that they are in a photo without getting the consent which is also very problematic.
Also usage of social media these replaced physical activity and socializing time. This also made the teenagers more anti social because they spend their time on social media thinking that it’s actually social.
These are the basic effects about social media so why do we use it? It usually ends up hurting people in some way. But that doesn’t mean it’s always negative. Social media always have on educational, inspirational and relatable videos to help you at times when you need it. Media also let’s users connect from one place to another no matter where it is. This lets socially awkward people or shy people easier chance to talk to others pushing their self esteem that could lead to normal social life.
However this shouldn’t let the users to have such wide range of time as more hours they spend on social media it always leads to negative issues. Because media could be so impactful positively and negatively based on how it’s used, I think teenagers should have a learning programme during their school times to learn what could possibly happen based on how it’s used to educate them. This could help a lot of teenagers to take the right path for their brighter future. What will your decision be? Will you be the brighter future with me?
In normal daily basis an average person spent time online for 1 hour and 40 minutes. So what are the influence and effect during that period of time? It is proven that people have higher rate of anxiety and depression compared to others that doesn’t use social media. The average of 1 hour and 40 minutes is very close to what professionals warn others as they say spending more than 2 hours per day on social media are more likely to report poor mental health, including psychological distress which is the symptoms of anxiety and depression. But social media also isn’t easy to quit it is also known to be described as more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. There’s also studies that shows more time spent on social media has a high association with poor sleep quality in young people. Cyberbullying is no less any better, it is known to have connections with mental health, education and social relationship that could last through adulthood. Loss of self esteem, body Image sets the standard of what other people think what looks the best and what looks bad. For young people both male and female try to become what people call the “standard body type”. It shows that people that use social media concerns are higher than non-users. FOMO, stands for fear of missing out. People that have higher level of social media engagement means that more an individual uses social media the more likely they are experience FOMO as missing those one post, one meme one anything that people are engaged to will result the person being in fear of missing out by their friends.
These are some examples of the outcome of use of social media. Social media is only known and spreaded out to others by the good side. 2008 24% used media and in 9 years 2017 the percentage increased to 81% which is 57% increase on social media 91% of 16 to 24 years old uses social media. The % of users and the increase of users will definitely change the path of youth and ultimately the future. So what will happen if it’s left as it is, and what can we do to prevent from having so much negative parts?
Everyday people are spending hours and hours on media looking at so called memes and selfies. All these hours used upon scrolling down and typing. During these hours on social media, the other half draws out. But that’s not it people who are using media sensibly are also a victim of social media by personal information leakage. Also media causes another main problem which is the “trend”. When using social media are you thinking about the consequences of an such imperfect medida platform?
When scrolling down through posts, when the other half of you is drawn out. Without realising you are already hating on someone because they don’t act normally, because they aren’t with the trend, because that person isn’t thinking the way you are. Users such as this don’t realise they are hurting someone and killing them inside. Statistics show that 15% of teenagers admit cyberbullying, statistics also show that in 2015, 36% of all teenagers reported feeling desperately sad of hopeless, or thinking about, planning or attempting suicide, up from 32% in 2009. For girls, the rates were highers – 45% in 2015 vs 40% in 2009. As medica became more famous the suicide rate and depression rate increased without a doubt nothing else has to be explained what’s going on. “After hours of scrolling through Instagram feeds, I just feel worse about myself because I feel left out.” Users of media should feel connected between others users however people are feeling left out.
The hours that has been spent everyday, everyone looking at the same post. All these people that has been at the same posts end up thinking the same. The fact that these incident happens quite worries me. At the age of 8 I lost my mother in the mall but luckily I caught her on the side of my eye. I chase her the distance is closed off and as I said “mom” I tremble as I’m frightened. The person looked the, wore the same clothing. This scenario happened to me countless times while I grew up. These days you go on a bus and everyone smells the same, looks the same, wears the same, there’s no end. Everyone is a duplicate of something that’s in trend. The creativity is lacking the statistics show that as time went by the creativity of a children is lacking. This is quite a shocking information that we should care. The imagination creates and the new childrens are our future for the brighter future we need to take actions.
Do you ever check your email and see spam ads and mails from a stranger? Do you ever wonder why? The reason is solely that the your personal information has been breached by people that shouldn’t know. Obviously there are lots of reasons how it could have been breached but media is the most concerning reason why. Social media lets other people take information depending on users security settings. It was confirmed that a kidnappers used exposed information from social media to kidnap a child. To prevent such vile action the rest 61% of the users of media that didn’t change their security settings should make a decision for their own safety and privacy.
Social media is a great achievement that still needs improvement for a safer use. It has connected users from nations to nations, making new friends, seeing new information that other people never heard before. However this platform isn’t perfect and need adjustment for the future, a brighter future. Will you be the brighter future with me?
