A number of experts, advocates, and policymakers are calling for a federal paid family and medical leave insurance law that would allow the United States to catch up to other developed nations and to address today’s workforce realities, characterized by families with two parents who work outside the home or an employed single mother. In December 2013, members of Congress introduced the FAMILY Act, which would create an insurance fund so that all workers could be paid when they stay home with their infants or newly adopted children and while caring for their own health needs or those of other family members.
